Not every collector is chasing perfection. Some are chasing connection. And for many of us, that means embracing the beauty of vintage items that show their age—especially when it comes to media like cassette tapes, CDs, and VHS.
We spoke with a Lula Grove collector who’s built a meaningful collection of tested, working cassettes—many of them without their original cases.
“It’s the music that matters.”
Q: Why collect items without the case?
A: Honestly, it started with practicality. I wanted to hear the music, not just admire the packaging. But over time, I realized these items had a story. A cassette without a case has probably been played, loved, maybe even passed around. That’s part of the charm.
Q: Do you still care about condition?
A: Of course! I want it to work. That’s why I appreciate Lula Grove’s listings with video proof. I know what I’m getting. But I don’t need mint condition. I need authenticity.
Q: How do you store your collection?
A: I use vintage cassette drawers and repurposed recipe boxes. I label them myself. It’s a little DIY, a little nostalgic. And it works.
Why Lula Grove Works for Case-Free Collectors
At Lula Grove, we test every cassette and CD before listing. If it’s missing a case, we say so. If it plays beautifully, we show you. That transparency is what makes collecting joyful—not stressful.
Whether it’s a Janet Jackson cassette, a gospel sermon from the '80s, or a Christmas compilation with no cover art, we believe every piece deserves a second life.
