At Lula Grove Homeschool Nook, we love turning everyday materials into meaningful learning tools. One of our favorite early math activities is the Number Board—a hands-on project that helps children in grades K–1 practice number recognition, sequencing, and skip counting in a fun and interactive way.
To create your own Number Board, start with a square yard of plywood or lightweight board. Add ten rows of ten nails (or cup hooks) to form a 10x10 grid. Then, cut out 100 round tags from tagboard or use durable key label discs. Number each tag from 1 to 100, punch a hole at the top, and place them in a box beside the board.
Children are invited to hang the tags in order from 1 to 100. This tactile experience reinforces number order and helps build confidence in early math skills. You can also introduce variations like skip counting by 2s, 5s, or 10s—or challenge them to hang only the odd numbers from 1 to 99.
A nearby table makes it easier for little learners to sort and find their numbers. At first, you may need to check their work, but soon they’ll be sequencing like pros!
This activity is a wonderful blend of fine motor practice, number sense, and independent learning—all wrapped up in a game-like format that kids love.
