Postman Counting Game (Grades K–1)

Welcome back to the Homeschool Nook at Lula Grove! Today’s activity is a fun and interactive way to help young learners practice counting and number recognition. Inspired by classic classroom games, this exercise turns your child into a busy postman delivering letters to city apartments!

🧰 What You’ll Need:

  • A whiteboard or sheet of paper
  • A marker or pencil
  • A diagram like the one below:
  ___________________________
 / \
| 3 | 7 | 4 | 9 |
|_____|_____|_____|_____|
| 8 | 6 | 2 | 5 |
|_____|_____|_____|_____|

Each number represents how many letters to be delivered to that apartment.

🗣️ How to Play:

  1. Set the Scene: Tell your child, “Let’s pretend you’re a postman and this is your apartment building. Each number shows how many letters you need to deliver.”
  2. Deliver the Mail: Point to an apartment and ask your child to draw one checkmark (✓) for each letter they would deliver. For example, if you point to apartment 7, they should draw seven checkmarks below it.
  3. Take Turns: Erase and repeat with different numbers. Let each child have a turn if you're working with a group.

✏️ Learning Goals:

  • Reinforces counting skills
  • Builds number recognition
  • Encourages fine motor practice
  • Adds imaginative play to math time
