- 2 cups quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats
- 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 1 package (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup)
- 1 cup chopped walnuts or dry-roasted peanuts
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 13x9x2-inch rectangular baking pan.
- In a saucepan over low heat, melt the caramels with milk, stirring often until smooth.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, and egg. Use a fork to mix in the softened butter until the mixture becomes crumbly.
- Press half of the crumb mixture into the prepared pan and bake for 10 minutes.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips and nuts over the baked base. Drizzle with the melted caramel mixture, then top with the remaining crumb mixture.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool for 30 minutes, loosen edges, and allow to cool completely before cutting.
