With a buttery base, crunchy nut coating, and jewel-toned jam centers, they’re as delightful to look at as they are to eat.

This recipe uses simple pantry staples and lets you customize the filling with your favorite jams—strawberry, damson plum, or grape—for a colorful presentation that’s sure to impress.

🧁 Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine, softened
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg white
  • 1 cup finely chopped nuts
  • 6 tablespoons jelly or jam (any flavor)

🔧 Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar, shortening, butter, vanilla, and egg yolk. Use an electric mixer on medium speed or stir by hand until well blended. Add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Roll dough into 1-inch balls. Lightly beat the egg white with a fork. Dip each ball into the egg white, then roll in chopped nuts. Place cookies about 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Press your thumb gently into the center of each ball to create a small well.
  4. Bake for approximately 10 minutes or until lightly golden. If needed, gently press the indentation again using the end of a wooden spoon. Transfer cookies to a wire rack and fill each thumbprint with about ½ teaspoon of jam.

Yields: About 3 dozen cookies
